# Listmonk alternatives: six self-hosted options, by what they add

> The best Listmonk alternatives in 2026, all self-hosted: Keila, Mautic, phpList, Mailtrain, Sendy, and Broadcast. Which one adds automation, a better UI, or lower ops, and which one to pick for your situation.

Listmonk is a good tool. It is a single Go binary, it uses Postgres, it sends fast, and it is free under the AGPL. People go looking for an alternative for one of three reasons. They need automation Listmonk does not have. They want a UI a non-developer can use. Or they want a product with a release cadence and someone to email. This page sorts the alternatives by which of those you are after.

Quick answer

The best Listmonk alternative depends on what Listmonk is missing for you. **Keila** if you want a nicer UI and stay open source. **Mautic** if you need deep automation and can run a PHP stack. **phpList** for a mature list manager with strong double opt-in. **Mailtrain** if your team is on Node. **Sendy** if you are on Amazon SES and want the cheapest paid option. **Broadcast** if you want sequences, a modern UI, and support for a one-time $250 license.

Conflict of interest

We make [Broadcast](https://sendbroadcast.net/), which is on this list. We have run Listmonk and most of the others. If a section reads as unfair to a competitor, [tell us](mailto:simon@furvur.com) and we will fix it.

## What Listmonk does not do

Before picking an alternative it helps to name the gap.

- **No automation.** No drip sequences, triggered emails, or branching. A welcome series means code against the API and a cron job.
- **A developer's UI.** It is clean and functional. It is not something you hand to a marketing hire.
- **Basic forms and reporting.** One embeddable subscribe form. Reports that tell you what sent and what bounced, and not much more.
- **No vendor.** Issues go to GitHub. That is fine for a lot of teams and a problem for some.

If none of those bother you, stay on Listmonk. It is excellent at the job it does.

## The six alternatives at a glance

| Platform | License | Adds over Listmonk | Costs you | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Keila | AGPL, free | Polished UI, EU origin | Elixir hosting, automations still planned | Non-developers who want to stay open source |
| Mautic | GPL, free | Full automation, lead scoring, landing pages | A PHP stack to run and days of tuning | Marketing teams with an ops person |
| phpList | AGPL, free | Mature subscription management | A dated UX | Non-profits and long-running lists |
| Mailtrain | GPL, free | Templates, basic automation | Smaller community | Teams already on Node |
| Sendy | About $69 one-time | Autoresponders, SES bounce handling | SES lock-in, per-install license | SES users who want the cheapest paid tool |
| Broadcast | $250 one-time | Sequences with branching, modern UI, support | Not open source | Founders and small teams who want a product |

## Keila

Keila is the closest thing to Listmonk in spirit: a free, open-source newsletter platform you run in Docker. It is written in Elixir, built in Germany, and has the most polished UI in open-source email. Segments and scheduled sends are there today. Automations and A/B testing are on the roadmap as of mid-2026, so if automation is your reason for leaving Listmonk, Keila does not solve it yet.

Pick Keila if you want the open-source license and a UI you can hand to someone who is not a developer. Detail in [Keila vs Listmonk](https://sendbroadcast.net/compare/keila-vs-listmonk).

## Mautic

Mautic is the opposite trade. It has the deepest automation builder in open source, with campaign graphs, lead scoring, landing pages, and CRM plugins. It also needs a web server, PHP-FPM, MySQL, cron, and a queue, and first installs commonly take days to tune. Major upgrades have a history of needing care.

Pick Mautic if you are replacing ActiveCampaign or HubSpot and someone can own the stack. Detail in [Listmonk vs Mautic](https://sendbroadcast.net/compare/listmonk-vs-mautic).

## phpList

phpList has been around since 2000 and it shows in both directions. The subscription management is mature and the double opt-in is done well. The UX is from another era. Automation is limited to scheduled sends.

Pick phpList if you run a non-profit or community list where stability matters more than the interface.

## Mailtrain

Mailtrain is a Node.js newsletter platform with a good template system, multi-list support, segments, and basic automation. Version 2 was a substantial rewrite and the community is smaller than Mautic's.

Pick Mailtrain if your team already runs Node services and wants to extend the tool in JavaScript.

## Sendy

Sendy is a paid PHP application, about $69 one-time per installation, that wraps Amazon SES. It handles SES bounces and complaints well and adds autoresponders, which are timed series after a signup with no conditional logic. It only works with SES, and the UI has not changed much in a decade.

Pick Sendy if you are committed to SES and want the cheapest paid step up from Listmonk. Detail in [Listmonk vs Sendy](https://sendbroadcast.net/compare/listmonk-vs-sendy).

## Broadcast

Broadcast is our product, so read this section with that in mind. It is a self-hosted Rails application sold as a $250 one-time license. It ships drip sequences with conditional branching, segmentation, opt-in forms, a transactional API, and webhooks. It runs as a single Docker image with an installer, connects to SES, Postmark, Mailgun, SendGrid, Resend, or any SMTP server, and includes email support. It is not open source.

Pick Broadcast if automation and support are why you are leaving Listmonk and you would rather pay once than build it. Detail in [Broadcast vs Listmonk](https://sendbroadcast.net/compare/broadcast-vs-listmonk).

## How to choose

1. **You only need a nicer UI and want to stay open source.** Keila.
2. **You need real automation and can run PHP.** Mautic.
3. **You need real automation and do not want to run PHP.** Broadcast.
4. **You are on SES and want the cheapest paid option.** Sendy.
5. **You run a long-lived community list.** phpList.
6. **Your stack is Node.** Mailtrain.

## Frequently asked

### What is the best open-source alternative to Listmonk?

Keila for a better UI, Mautic for automation. Both are free. Keila runs in Docker and is easier to operate. Mautic needs a PHP stack and an ops person.
