Understanding BIMI

What is BIMI?

BIMI (Brand Indicators for Message Identification) lets mailbox providers show your logo next to your messages in the inbox. You publish a TXT record that points to an SVG logo, and the provider displays it for mail that passes DMARC.

What do I need before BIMI works?

A DMARC policy of p=quarantine or p=reject that covers all of your mail, a square logo in the SVG Tiny Portable/Secure format served over HTTPS, and for Gmail and Apple Mail a Verified Mark Certificate (VMC) or Common Mark Certificate (CMC).

Do I need a VMC?

For Gmail and Apple Mail, yes: they show logos only with a VMC or CMC. A VMC needs a registered trademark and costs roughly a thousand dollars or more a year from a certificate authority. Yahoo may show BIMI logos without a certificate.

Why is my logo not showing?

The usual causes are a DMARC policy at p=none, a logo that is not valid SVG Tiny PS, no mark certificate for Gmail, or low sender reputation. Providers also cache BIMI, so a fixed record can take a few days to show up.

Does BIMI improve deliverability?

Not directly. BIMI does not change whether a message reaches the inbox. The DMARC enforcement it requires does help, and a recognizable logo can lift open rates.
